Stayed two nights - lovely property, beautifully furnished with great attention to detail. Comfortable beds, clean rooms. Roland took great care in providing a wonderful breakfast that I could eat, as I have food allergies. Delicious - and the care is priceless! Thank you and I will be back again!
The Portobello Inn has all you expect from a first-rate bed and breakfast and more: a historic house furnished tastefully with interesting antiques, a comfortable bed for a great night's sleep, the gracious but unobtrusive hospitality of thoughtful and experienced innkeepers in Roland and Steve topped off by a delicious breakfast. By the way, did I mention the incredible breakfast?
Lovely 1800s inn located just outside city limits of Herkemer. Decorated with antique Italian furniture. Our room was lovely, roomy, with a gas fireplace to take the chill of the day off. The train rumbles by several times a day. We would return.
2nd time spending the weekend away from the kids and getting spoiled with breakfasts, massages, hot tub and sauna, All the amenities you could ask for and then some. Why go to a hotel when this is so much better and affordable. Private, romantic and relaxing. Hope to get back later this year. Thank you Chris and Leon. Mike and Anne Drenkalo
Great Job by the hosts. Roland was available when we knocked on the door. Rooms were clean and well appointed. Breakfast was both plentiful and freshly prepared, with a large variety of choices. The only thing I would note was that the electric fireplace in the room made a slight grinding noise - not even really an issue as we turned it off when we went to bed.
I arrived after dark, so could not see the lovely bones of this old home, but the even older home still standing from the early 1800's stands right next to this one, and its beautiful logs and old clapboards create an aura that can't be matched by many B&B's. The breakfast was incredibly tasty: crisp bacon, a piping hot cheese souffle, fresh muffins, fresh fruit and four juices. The owners are extremely hospitable and welcoming, making a stay as homey and comfortable as my own mom's. I will return again and again.
This is the second time that my wife and I have stayed here and we simply love this B&B. Chris and Leon are wonderful hosts (and cooks!) with some very friendly pets who make you feel right at home. The breakfast is excellent and the rooms are so cozy. We have stayed in two different rooms and both have been comfortable, clean, and beautifully furnished with antiques. The building and furniture are just so beautiful. I'm sure we will be going back when we next venture out to the Herkimer area!
Lovely room with sitting area. Modern windows and white noise machine muffled sounds from the state highway and passing trains. Roland was a considerate and gracious host and a fine cook, while Steve generously offered an abundance of information on local history. My room had a hair dryer, something not obvious on the website. There was a Keurig machine in the upstairs hall, plus a microwave and a tiny refrigerator with bottled water and space for small items, all near a sitting area in the hall. Roland even provided a proper dinner plate, utensils, and cloth napkin when I brought in some hot take-out food. The well water system might shut itself off unexpectedly in the middle of the night when drought conditions are present, but there's bottled water handy, and Roland resets the system as quickly as possible so that nobody is inconvenienced. An air conditioner and ceiling fan kept the room cool and comfortable. I had a most enjoyable stay.
Roland was the most gracious host - and was always available to answer questions and address a minor issue (which is to be expected at any historic home). Breakfasts were delicious and room was delightfully comfortable. Lots of antiques on the lower level - fun to explore! We stayed here to visit Cooperstown during HOF week - location is an easy 40 minute drive.
The room was lovely and clean. The breakfast was more than enough and delicious. The steep stairs were not good. All the antiques including the piano were really nice. And the host and hostess were attentive and professional.
We visited the area to go to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, and were very pleased with the Bellinger's proximity to there as well as the Canal Cruises, food etc. Leon and Chris were very personable and friendly without being too pushy. The breakfast was great and very easy to customize every day. The whole house was gorgeous, obviously well cared for and the dishes were exquisite. We stayed in the Heritage Rose room and were very pleased with it, the closet was huge, big enough to put suitcases etc in. The AC was great as it was pretty warm when we were there. One night we sat out back at the fire pit with the owners as well as another very nice couple, great way to relax! There was a sauna, treadmill and hottub available, though we did not use them this time, we will in the future! Their dog and cats were friendly but not too pushy, just adorable. We will definitely come back next time we want to go back to the mines :)
We arrived early and was welcomed into their beautiful home despite the hour. Because we were the only guest midweek, Chris upgraded our room to the largest one. It was a beautiful retreat- just what we were hoping for. We were treated like royalty ! My husband and I just loved the cats- who were more like dogs. If I am ever in this area again, Bellinger Rose will be our destination,
Chris and Leon are wonderful hosts-- very warm and welcoming without being the least bit intrusive. The bedrooms and house are amazingly beautiful without being overdone with nick nacks. The breakfasts are gourmet quality without being overdone or too sweet. They also are very accommodating in allowing you to choose your breakfast. Chris's massages are amazing! The surrounding Mohawk Valley and small towns around it are beautiful and historic anytime of year We have been coming for over a decade and it is always on our list of places to go for a short get-away. Note they do have cats, but we come despite my wife's allergies and they keep the place very clean so she can last without her allergy medication
We stayed here for two nights for our niece's wedding. The host Roland and Steve were very nice. Very welcoming, breakfast was delightful each morning. A Victorian house with nice charm, bright bedrooms with private bathrooms for each.
Warm and welcoming hosts made our stay a delight. Roland and Steve shared their knowledge of the area and the history of their beautiful home and made us feel "at home". Portobello Inn was a highlight of our trip and we definitely recommend it. Nance and Ken
My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary with a stay at Belinger Rose. It was our second visit there. Chris and Leon are outstanding hosts and although we didn't see any of Leon this time around Chris certainly carried the day. Not only that but she is an incredible massage therapist. I highly recommend both the B&B and the massage.
From the moment Roland met us at the door,. we found the service at Portobello to be attentive, but in no way overbearing. The Inn is beautifully decorated, with a fabulous collection of antiques. The room was comfortable and quite clean, with surprising attention to detail (for example, ironed bedsheets and towels). Breakfasts were exceptional, with a good variety of pretty healthy choices, well prepared (see recipes on the website!). One of the owners spent time one morning telling us about the interesting history of the area, We were looking only for a place to stay over the weekend while we visited relatives, but found it to be much more than that, We would return just for the B&B.
The Portobello Inn is a hidden treasure in Central NY. Roland and Steve made us feel completely at home in their magnificent inn. The historic home is backdrop for tremendous service and amazing breakfasts. As anyone who has owned a historic home can attest, they are always a work-in-progress... The Portobello Inn has enough charm to make up for a few repairs that were underway during our stay.
Stay one night in early June. We were met by a gracious host who remember all our requests and upgrade our room to the Arlington. The room was comfortable, well decorated and quiet (no concern in this room due to closest of train tracks.) Breakfast was well prepared and tasty. A lovely egg dish with the recipe shared. Do not avoid this lovely and old home due to the outside appearance. Per our host the flaking outside paint has been a problem and not easily solved.
