We stayed at Madewood our first night in Lousiana. The property and home are beautiful and feel like someone's private home and not like a hotel. Our rooms in the main house were spacious and charming, filled with antiques and comfortable beds. The bathroom in my room was small, but well-equipped, with two tall and inviting beds, and the Nursery where my friend stayed was filled with children's toys and had an attached, spacious bathroom. The nicest part of the stay was the convivial evening of having wine and cheese, followed by dinner, followed by brandy and coffee in the living room. We were an eclectic group, which made for varied and interesting conversation. The food was homemade and well-prepared, with a salad, soup, entree, and dessert course. The cornbread was light and sweet, with a cake-like texture, and the greens fresh and crisp. The main course of etoufee was creamy and served in puff pasty shells with sweet potatoes and asparagus as a side. Bread pudding provided a sweet end to the meal and the coffee was rich and mellow. Breakfast the next morning was also served and consisted of a fruit and bread course, followed by a frittata and grits course, as well as juice and coffee. The house is handsomely furnished with period antiques and the public spaces spacious and inviting. The manager and her staff run a smoothly-operating business and we enjoyed ourselves down to the last detail. The grounds are lovely for wandering in and include a shaded and gardened area between the main house and the annex in back. A very gracious experience we shall remember and a unique way to begin our trip along the Mississippi.

Extraordinary place. Too authentic to be called luxurious but really gives a sense of what living in a grand plantation house must have been like in the antebellum south.Excellent value, friendly service, quiet and comfy, Thumbs up!

A former plantation house as a bed and breakfast. We stayed one night. After a cheese and wine reception with the owner followed a 3 course meal. Because of no other guest we had the house for us during the night. It was a great experience to live like a plantation house owner for one night.

We happened to be the only guests during our night at Madewood (august is the hot period), and we had a great time enjoying the house for ourselves! Food was delicious, people very kind and helpful.

Our anniversary weekend was incredible! We really enjoyed the quite, relaxed atmosphere. Actually staying in the home was quite an experience. The staff was very pleasant. The food was possibly the best we have ever had.

My daughter and I stayed here last year for four days and came back this year for an entire week! Our room was gorgeous, we slept in a half tester antique bed. The service there is excellent and whatever they are paying Angie isn't enough because she goes way above and beyond! We went this year to celebrate my daughters high school graduation and she had the choice to choose anywhere and she chose Madewood because of our previous wonderful visit last year. Angie not only made a cake for my daughter but she actually called the school (in Missouri) so she could decorate it with her school colors, all a wonderful surprise for us! She also took her personal time to show us a very secret spot :) Our room was extremely spacious, the food was absolutely delicious and you honestly feel as comfortable as home. Any visit to Louisiana will always have Madewood as our home base!!

This place has the potential to be one of the best B & B's in the south. Some upgrades are definitely needed and it could smell a lot better but it was a great experience. I would love to have a home like this. I felt as if I literally stepped back in time. A porch swing and some sweet tea would have made my visit ideal. The dining experience was very authentic. Angie did a fabulous job. Eating by candlelight is something that everyone should do, even if it's in their own home. There was a southern ease about it that made me not want to get up from the table. The only critics I have are that it could have smelled better and it could have been cleaner. The bed skirts and carpets were rather dirty and I understand that the place is quite old, but there's no reason for the smell. The air conditioner was not sufficient and made this Yankee Gal quite uncomfortable. The outside of the house was riddled with cobwebs and mud-wasp nests... not exactly ideal for visitors. Like I said, the place has all the potential to be spectacular and I hope they're able to accomplish that because it truly is a gem!

We are delighted that this writer had such a lovely visit to Madewood and wish she’d requested some sweet tea, as we would have been delighted to provide it. Because of the historic character of the mansion, we can’t offer porch swings; but we do have two swings -- one used by singer Beyonce in a recent filming -- hanging from oak trees on the property. Guests love to have their picture taken on that one! We actually feel that for 33 years Madewood has been one of the best B&Bs in the South. We’ve certainly learned a lot over three decades and have tried to incorporate guests’ suggestions to make the Madewood experience even better. We’re not sure exactly how a 170-year-old National Historic Landmark should smell; but when the writer mentioned this, we immediately switched her to another room and heard no further comments. Nothing was said about the air conditioning. Sometimes guests inadvertently select energy saving mode when they really want full speed ahead; but we must be advised of any problem in order to correct it. We checked the dust ruffle in the bedroom and discovered a small coffee stain that had gone unnoticed. Unfortunately, in spring and summer, it’s almost impossible to keep up with mud-dauber nests, which seem to pop up outside overnight. Despite our best efforts, spiders may choose to spin their webs on porches; Madewood is in the countryside, and they just sneak up on you. Part of the difficulty in maintaining everything in tip-top-shape is keeping up with damage caused by guests. In this party of three couples, one gentleman could not take the time to call the three cell-phone numbers listed when they returned after dark and found the rear door locked. One of the original glass sidelights at the rear entrance was shattered by heavy blows that alarmed guests in a nearby ground-floor bedroom. Just knocking on the wooden door or frame to alert someone inside would have sufficed. We hope to replace it with original wavy glass to protect Madewood’s reputation as one of the best, and most historically-significant B&Bs in the South. Overtall a good experience. Great house, beautiful furniture, excellent dinner. However the cleanliness of the room is questionable, especially around the toilet, dust on the shades, etc. The electrical installation is outdated: impossible to put the light on (string broken), safety is questionable. Breakfast is too heavy for European stomaches. Excellent welcome and service quality.
