I was stuck in my writing and in need of inspiration, and booked an impromptu three-night stay at Yelton Manor over Labor Day. I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast, and wasn’t sure what to expect. At Yelton, you can be as social as you want. Breakfast is served at one of a number of small, private tables throughout the expansive manor. Some mornings, I struck up conversations with people, while other mornings, everyone kept to themselves. I was looking for inspiration, and I found it, first of all in the setting itself. Yelton is steeped in story. Every time you think you’ve seen everything, you find another nook. Each and every nook, every turn of every corner is stuffed with books, something to suit every taste. Elaine is an amazing chef. Her vegetarian dishes show the love she has for good, healthy meals. She pours her passion into her cooking, and it shows in the variety of tastes, textures and colors that she gets on a plate. Some of the vegetables are grown in her own garden, while other items are sourced locally. And she makes her own specialty items, such as hummus and a variety of pickled nibblies. There always seems to be more food. Yelton is within walking distance of downtown South Haven, and when I first arrived, Robert gave me an overview of the geography, including good places to eat and things to do. I know that part of the B&B experience is the hospitality, but Robert and Elaine go above and beyond. Besides helpful tips, you can also borrow a DVD from their extensive library to watch in your room later, borrow one of their beach towels or take advantage of the free triple chocolate brownies, fresh popcorn and ice cold cucumber water, which are available all day. The room itself was neat and clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff had stocked it with many thoughtful amenities, including a variety of bath oils for the jacuzzi tub. There was also a bluetooth speaker to play music from my phone.
We liked our stay, but we were disappointed about the bikes since they all needed air in their tires and other issues. We were also disappointed about our departure day, the day we scheduled an early morning breakfast, they were not prepared. In advance before our stay, we emailed to have an early breakfast on our departure, but when we arrived it was not in their schedule. So they changed it. The morning we needed it, because we needed to leave at a certain time, they again did not have it in their schedule to have our breakfast ready.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Victoria Resort. The staff was so welcoming and helpful. They made you feel like family and did everything they could to ensure your trip was an enjoyable one. The stay included two complimentary wine tastings and many in town recommendations. We were very pleased with our room, the Queen Delux, and couldn’t have been happier with our stay.
We had a wonderful stay at the Black River Bed and Breakfast! I recommend the St Moritz room on the main level! A suite really! The owners were very welcoming and you felt like you were visiting old friends. Located a short 8 mins from downtown South Haven and the beaches, surrounded by the countryside and wild life. A true getaway! You are also just minutes from the Kai Haven trail for hiking and bike riding. The breakfasts were wonderful. Fantastic setting. We will be back!
