We had a wonderful stay in the Guest Cottage in August. The rainforest setting, the privacy and natural surroundings enhance the beautifully furnished, spacious wooden cottage. Our every need was thoughtfully catered for, and fresh breakfast was brought each evening for us to eat when we wanted. The food was beautiful, fresh and healthy, and the décor, equipment and furnishings all mindfully placed. Cleaning and care were to a high standard. Such a lovely visit, thank you!
This was the most relaxing, well-kept and luxurious place I have ever stayed in. Every single thing you need was in the house, the breakfast was delicious and the owners are amazingly nice and caring people. They had lots of recommendations for places in the area! The hot tub is a small walk from the cottage and it's amazing how secluded it is. If I'm ever back on the big island, I am definitely going to book this again. It's very much worth it!
Our family (2 adults, girl/boy 16/15) stayed in 5 places - resorts, inns, B&Bs - on our trip to Hawaii, and we all had this place as our favorite or runner-up. Knowing my family, that's saying something! Vacationing should relax you, and should allow you to do more than just "visit" a place; it should have you assume the rhythm and cadence of the area. No place did either of these as effectively as here. The Lodge is quirky and relaxing (we all slept best here, even without AC), and the innkeepers are all that and quite knowledgeable too - Mark is an encyclopedia of everything Big Island-related - and from the first night when they broke out the wine, they had us. They were a big reason why our trip was so successful. Sunrises on the short lava cliffs overlooking the beach - a short walk through their back yard - were not to be missed. The surfsound at this place was the best we experienced anywhere - not only the waves hitting the lava ledges, but tumbling the smooth lava stones as it receded... Perfect. Any place can provide lodging, but there are few places that truly actively help you to achieve what you came on vacation for... This is one of them. Mahalo Raven and Mark!
This was an exceptionally cozy home with all the guide books and local insight built in. We are a family of four, with one teenager and one under 10 and we loved the garden, location, and the down-time from our action packed days. Great little kitchen perfectly stocked for cooking if that is your preference (I gave onsite dining a four because they provided basic necessities), or Volcano Village is very near by. We will visit again.
What a beautiful home! We stayed (3 adults) in the Makai room in the cottage out the back. A very spacious room and clean room, we were able to enter the main house to enjoy. Barbara and Gary were very friendly and accomodating, we took on their recommendations for dinner and activities. The morning buffet was devine, a great selection of local foods. Highly recommended!
We stayed two nights at crater rim cabin in April 2017, when visiting the big island for the first time. Going in the cabin felt like stepping inside a magical word, like what you fantasize about when going to a cabin! The hosts are so nice and careful in preparing everything, it is immediately clear that they love hosting people and thinking about what people need and want. There are books, magazines, various knick knacks... well equipped kitchens (including various fruit, breakfast and cooking material). We loved it! We came as a family. When my son saw this place, he told me: "this person is very kind to let us stay at his house" and he also said "this is much better than a hotel!". It really did feel like a house made for people to enjoy. I highly recommend staying there!
This place is amazing! Would 100% recommend staying here. Everyone gets an individual Japanese style cottage. It's very spacious and flooded with natural light. You have total privacy from your neighbor even though they are only 50-100 feet away. Most cottages have a Japanese soaking bath which was perfect after long hikes. It's only a 5 minute drive to Volcano Village. The owner was super friendly and responsive. Breakfast was brought to you the day before and you made it in your kitchenette
This place is absolutely stunning. Super private and had everything you would want on a romantic getaway. Although in the middle of the jungle, we were surprised that there was so few bugs. Very clean and the furnishings were super nice. If we ever visit the Big Island again, we will definitely try to stay here again.
Staying at the Volcano Teapot Cottage was perfect for us. Wonderful location, very near a great restaurant for dinner and a store for extras. The cottage is beautifully decorated, well stocked and came complete with all the information I could ever need about the area. The hot tub was wonderful. It was a total delight to stay here.
Stayed 3 nights. Loved it. Charming, cozy, delightful. Concierge level service when needed from the owners next door, but total privacy and seclusion otherwise. Outstanding value for the location and the amenities. Stand alone one bedroom cabin set in a gorgeous tropical garden, very close to Volcanoes National Park. The cabin exudes a rustic yet comfortable vibe. We plan to return soon. Most highly recommended.
This was a wonderful place to celebrate our 10th anniversary. Ira and the staff at the cafe and gallery are friendly and helpful but never intrusive. Especially after the gallery and cafe close for the day, the property is very peaceful and private. The fridge was well stocked, and we appreciated the abundance of coffee. We wish we could transplant the shower to our own house. It's wonderful. The hot tub is also a nice touch. It only takes about a 3-4 minute drive to get into Volcano National Park from the cottage, making it a great home base for hiking and nighttime lava viewing. There are also a few good restaurants right down the street in Volcano Village. There's private parking and a separate gate for accessing the cottage, so you can come and go easily. We really can't say anything bad about this place, and we would love to return someday.
Rayven and Mark are great hosts full of information and pleasant discussions. They truly made us feel welcome, we even extended our stay. We stayed in the King Suite, which was clean and had so much character to the smallestdetail.
Great bed and breakfast to stay at while exploring the magical Big Island. Room was spacious and clean and had everything we needed. The breakfast was amazing and the proprietors made us feel like family. Would highly recommend.
Ma'ukele Lodge was truly a unique and amazing experience...tropical, jungle-like, lava landscape, ocean view and access. Raven and Mark are such wonderful and welcoming hosts. We felt like friends as soon as we met them. We LOVE how they keep their home open all the time. Raven has done an amazing job of decorating, including the outdoor area with shower and tub. She is so generous with her guests, leaving them chocolates and drinks stocked in the frig. She makes an amazing breakfast at the most convenient time for her guests. Mark's knowledge of the area and history is so interesting. Truly kind and loving hosts. The location is so perfect...near the best snorkeling we've ever done, beautiful black sands beaches, hot ponds, the viewing of the volcano, and Uncle Roberts! Thank you Raven and Mark!
This is a great place to stay to see lava flows and snorkeling with a close drive. Enjoy the open air rooms (no air conditioners a plus as no loud mechanical noises, only frogs), fun exploring lava beachfront, breakfast with ocean sounds and views. The breakfast is tops!!
We stayed here three nights in May. Our room was spacious and famous, the one where Jack London and his wife stayed. Outside our room was a wide veranda where we spent time, to sit,to enjoy being out of the rain and to absorb the peace. Breakfasts were divine. Home made biscuits, made by one of the owners and an explanation of all that was available by the other one. 4 kinds of granola, yogurt, toppings....various kinds of tropical fruit (all but papaya grown onsite)....bread and bagels that could be toasted, lilikoi butter, 4 or 5 fruit jams....fruit smoothie.....hot water for tea and coffee. And, the hosts sat and ate and talked story with us.
The Teapot Cottage is fantastic! The grounds are well maintained. The house is immaculate and extremely comfortable with all the necessary elements for a fun stay. The owners are friendly, accessible and helpful. The tea, coffee and breakfast items are delicious and plentiful. Would return anytime!
Stayed in Aunt Clara's Shell Room for three days. I strongly recommend this B&B for travelers who want to stay on the east side of Hawaii. Barbara and Gary are delightful, thoughtful hosts. They restored Shipman House, a home that has been in Barbara's family for 100+ years. They know everything about the island and give very well thought out advice. The breakfasts consist of mostly homegrown fruits and from scratch baked breakfast breads, hot cereals, granola, hard boiled eggs, cheeses and yogurts. Must try the smoothies! Aunt Clara's private bathroom is not ensuite,, but the room looks out onto Hilo Bay. Beautiful!
We stayed at the Volcano Teapot Cottage for two nights and upon arrival, we wished we had booked a few more nights. In fact, I longed for the Cottage during the rest of our stay at a resort in Waikoloa. No detail was spared and it was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. The grounds were immaculate and Bill and Antoinette added nice touches, like pastries, fruit, yogurt, etc. I am a very picky traveler and rarely give five stars across the board. The Volcano Teapot Cottage is the exception. Look no further if you're planning a trip to Volcanoes National Park.
We had a great stay at this lovely cabin in Volcano! Located just outside the national park it provided a wonderful home base for exploring the entire area. The cabin was well supplied with everything we needed, including a lot of area information, and much more space than a usual hotel room for our family of four (2 adults and 2 children). The kitchen was stocked with coffee, milk, eggs, cereal, bread, fruit, and juice - much more than we'd anticipated. The owners were delightful and responsive both over email and in person.
We spent three enjoyable nights here, while visiting with family and touring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and other natural wonders. Ira's Artist Cottage is perfect for a single or a couple who want a quiet comfortable place to relax after a busy day of touring. The four person outdoor jacuzzi around the corner from the front door of the cottage was very relaxing. Fruit, delicious granola, banana bread, coffee, and a choice of teas provided a good start to each day. On the same grounds as the Cottage is the Volcano Garden Arts gallery, filled with a wide variety of local arts and crafts, and Cafe Ono, a great vegetarian restaurant. The entrance to the National Park is just four miles upslope. We very much enjoyed our time at the Artist Cottage, and recommend it highly to anyone who wants an authentic local base for exploring Goddess Pele's natural volcanic wonders.
